"A poignant portrayal of the realities of Indian society."
Phanishwar Nath Renu's entire literary corpus is firmly rooted in the foundation of politics. He never considered literature to be less than politics in terms of its role in social change. Like "Maïla Aanchal" and "Paratī Parikathā," the novel "Juloos" tells the story of the intertwined relationships and struggles between the newly settled village of Nabinnagar in Purnia district and the formerly prestigious village of Godiyar. In this novel, Renu presents the poignant tale of the suffering and pain of those who came to India after being displaced from East Bengal due to the riots following independence in a heartfelt manner.
At the same time, he also portrays the enduring darkness, superstitions, poverty, and hunger prevailing in the villages even fourteen or fifteen years after independence. He shows how people are trapped in various complexities. A revolutionary social consciousness and a sense of resistance towards feudal values and people are evident in almost all of Renu's novels, including this one. Such elements can also be seen in this novel. Additionally, readers will find unforgettable characters like Pavitra in this emotional narrative of the bond between soil and humanity
